About Pitti Palace Courtyard, Florence

Pitti Palace began as the home of the wealthy Pitti family before the Medici purchased it in the sixteenth century. Its courtyard was enlarged by Bartolomeo Ammannati, who used strongly textured stonework to connect the palace with the rising gardens behind it. The complex later housed other ruling families and now contains several museum collections. This view focuses on the enclosed courtyard and fountain, where repeated windows, rough stone blocks and formal architectural lines provide a different picture of Florence from its familiar skyline.

Puzzle tip: match the fountain and horizontal stone bands first, then work through the repeating windows.
