About Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome

Santa Maria in Trastevere faces a lively square on the western side of the Tiber in Rome. The church has ancient origins, but much of the building seen today belongs to a medieval rebuilding. Gold-ground mosaics on the upper facade and a brick bell tower help distinguish it from the houses surrounding the square. This photograph concentrates on those architectural details, with the decorated front, clock and warm stone colours showing how a historic church remains at the heart of an everyday Roman neighbourhood.

Puzzle tip: start with the gold mosaic band and clock, then use the roof slopes to place the surrounding walls.
