About Sea Castle of Sidon

The Sea Castle of Sidon stands on a small island just off the old harbour, joined to the shore by a stone causeway. It was built by the Crusaders in 1228, and its builders reused old Roman columns, laying them crossways in the walls to strengthen them. Sidon itself, about 40 kilometres south of Beirut, was one of the great Phoenician cities, famous for its glass and for the purple dye made from sea snails. Its old souks and caravanserais lie just behind the harbour.

Puzzle tip: the castle walls are the clearest part, so start there; the calm water and the sky fill in last.
