About Shirakawa-go in Summer

Shirakawa-go is a mountain village in Gifu Prefecture, famous for its farmhouses with steep thatched roofs. The style is called gassho-zukuri, because the roofs look like hands joined in prayer; their steep slopes shed the heavy winter snow, and the large attics were once used to raise silkworms. Together with the nearby villages of Gokayama, Shirakawa-go became a World Heritage Site in 1995. This summer view from the hillside shows dozens of thatched houses among green fields and gardens.

Puzzle tip: start with the big thatched roofs in front, then the smaller houses and fields, and finish with the forested hills.
