About Shuri Castle, Okinawa

Shuri Castle in Naha was the royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which ruled Okinawa and its islands for about 450 years before they became part of Japan in 1879. Its architecture mixes Chinese and Japanese styles, with bright red lacquer and dragon carvings. The castle was destroyed in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 and rebuilt in 1992, but its main hall burned down again in 2019, and rebuilding work started in 2022. This photo shows the main hall and its striped courtyard before the fire.

Puzzle tip: start with the red hall and its golden decorations, then the striped courtyard, and finish with the blue sky.
