About Stone Ship Graves of Lindholm Høje, Aalborg

Lindholm Høje, on a hill above the city of Aalborg in northern Jutland, is one of the largest burial grounds of the Iron Age and Viking Age in Scandinavia, with nearly 700 graves. Many of them are marked by stones set out in the shape of ships, ovals and triangles, as if to carry the dead on a last voyage. Around the year 1000 drifting sand covered the whole hill, which kept the stones in place for centuries until archaeologists uncovered them in the 1950s. This photo shows rows of grey boulders standing in dry summer grass.

Puzzle tip: start with the big grey stones in front, then the rows behind them, the dark trees and the sky.
