About The Crooked Forest near Nowe Czarnowo

In a small pine wood near the village of Nowe Czarnowo, in north-western Poland close to the German border, about 400 pine trees grow with a sharp bend at the bottom of their trunks: each one curves sideways, almost all towards the north, and then rises straight up. They were planted around 1930, and no one knows for sure why they grew like this. Some think foresters bent the young trees on purpose to make curved timber for furniture or boats, others blame heavy snow or tanks in the Second World War. In this photo rows of curved trunks stand on the forest floor.

Puzzle tip: follow the curves of the trunks one by one; the green ground and the distant trees come last.
