About Windmills of Kinderdijk

The nineteen windmills of Kinderdijk stand in a row along the water east of Rotterdam. Most of them were built around 1740 to pump water out of the Alblasserwaard, a low area of farmland surrounded by rivers, and to keep it dry. Today electric pumping stations do that job, but the mills still turn and several are still lived in by millers and their families. Kinderdijk shows how the Dutch have managed water for centuries, and it has been a World Heritage Site since 1997. In the photo the mills are reflected in the calm canal.

Puzzle tip: start with the dark windmills and their reflections; the reeds come next and the blue sky is last.
