About The Walls of Saint-Malo above the Beach

Saint-Malo is a walled port on the north coast of Brittany, once home to the corsairs, private sea captains who were allowed by the king to attack enemy ships. The explorer Jacques Cartier, who sailed up the St Lawrence River in 1535, was born here. During the Second World War about four-fifths of the old town was destroyed, and it was carefully rebuilt in granite to look as before. The tides here are among the highest in Europe, rising and falling by up to about thirteen metres. In this photo the ramparts and tall houses rise above a golden beach and turquoise water.

Puzzle tip: start with the ramparts and the houses behind them, then the sand, and finish with the turquoise sea and the blue sky.
