About Turquoise Water of Band-e Amir National Park

The name Band-e Amir means "Dam of the Commander". According to local legend, the commander was Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, who is said to have built the stone dams to hold back the water. Scientists explain them differently: over thousands of years, calcium carbonate settled out of the water and slowly built up the pale walls between the lakes. In this view, red and grey cliffs of the Hindu Kush rise above water so clear that the stones on the bottom can be seen.

Puzzle tip: the stones under the water have the most detail, so start there; the red cliffs and the sky are next.
