About Altar of the Buried Church, San Juan Parangaricutiro

When the lava of Parícutin filled the church of San Juan Parangaricutiro, it stopped just short of the main altar. Local people saw this as a small miracle, and the altar has been a place of prayer ever since. Visitors climb over blocks of cooled lava to reach it and leave flowers, candles and small offerings. The ruined arch above it, made of the same grey stone as the walls, still frames the altar as it did before 1944. In this picture the colourful offerings stand out against the grey stone and black rock.

Puzzle tip: the white altar and the bright flowers in the centre are the place to start; the rough lava around them comes last.
