About Parícutin Volcano above the Forest

On 20 February 1943 a farmer named Dionisio Pulido saw the ground of his cornfield in Michoacán crack open and begin to smoke. Within a day a cone of ash stood there, and within a year it was more than 300 metres high. Parícutin went on erupting until 1952, and it became the first volcano that scientists could study from its birth to its end. It is counted among the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Here its dark, bare cone rises above young trees that have grown back on the old lava.

Puzzle tip: start with the bare grey slopes of the cone; the fresh green leaves in front have the brightest colours.
