About Fishing Boats on the Beach, Santa Maria, Sal

Santa Maria, at the southern tip of the island of Sal, was founded in 1830 by the Portuguese-Cape Verdean trader Manuel António Martins to ship the island's salt abroad. The long wooden pier he built for loading salt is now used by fishermen, who land tuna, wahoo and other fish there every afternoon. Sal is flat, dry and almost always windy, which has made Santa Maria's eight kilometres of white sand popular with kitesurfers and windsurfers. In this photo brightly painted fishing boats lie on the beach in front of palm trees and the town's low houses.

Puzzle tip: the colourful boats are the easiest part; the white sand and the blue sky are best left for last.
