About Tomb of Askia, Gao

The Tomb of Askia in Gao was built in 1495 by Askia Mohammed I, the ruler of the Songhai Empire, which then stretched across much of West Africa. On his return from a pilgrimage to Mecca he raised this tomb, a pyramid of mud about 17 metres high, bristling with wooden beams, using earth said to have been brought from Mecca by camel. Next to it stand two mosques and a burial ground. The tomb is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This photo shows the pyramid behind the enclosure wall.

Puzzle tip: start with the mud pyramid and its wooden beams, then the long wall and the trees, and the sandy ground and sky last.
