About Persepolis

Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, founded by Darius the Great around 518 BC. On a huge stone terrace stood palaces and halls where envoys from across the empire brought gifts to the king, as shown in the reliefs carved along its staircases. Alexander the Great burned it in 330 BC, but its columns and gateways still stand. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Puzzle tip: the stone gateways and columns stand out against the sky; the ruins below come next.
