About Painted Courtyard of Palazzo Vecchio, Florence

Behind the fortress-like exterior of Palazzo Vecchio lies a courtyard filled with carved columns, painted arches and decorative details. Michelozzo remodelled this first courtyard in the fifteenth century, before the Medici transformed the palace into their residence. Later decoration included views of Austrian cities for the marriage of Francesco de' Medici and Joanna of Austria in 1565. The photograph looks upward through the courtyard, revealing how painted surfaces and sculpted stone turn a small entrance space into an elaborate setting for visitors.

Puzzle tip: follow the pale arches and decorated columns before filling in the smaller painted scenes.
