About Snow Monkeys in a Hot Spring, Jigokudani

In the Jigokudani valley in Nagano Prefecture, Japanese macaques bathe in a natural hot spring to keep warm through the snowy winter. They are the most northerly living monkeys apart from humans, and their thick fur lets them survive temperatures well below freezing. The valley's name, Hell Valley, comes from the steam rising from its hot springs. The monkeys first began bathing here in the 1960s. In this photo two of them soak in the steaming pool beneath snow-covered rocks.

Puzzle tip: start with the monkeys' faces and fur, then the rocks at the edge of the pool, and finish with the snow and the steam.
