About Kaliakra Fortress on Its Headland

Cape Kaliakra is a narrow headland that runs about two kilometres out into the Black Sea, with red cliffs up to 70 metres high. Thracians, Romans, Byzantines and medieval Bulgarians all built fortifications on it, and the ruins of walls, gates and a small museum can still be seen. In 1791 a Russian fleet under Admiral Fyodor Ushakov defeated the Ottoman navy just off the cape. A local legend tells of forty Bulgarian girls who tied their hair together and jumped into the sea rather than be captured. This aerial photo shows the old walls along the edge of the cliffs.

Puzzle tip: start with the stone walls on the headland, then fill the rocky cliffs and the dark sea around them.
