About Al-Touta Square, Ghadames

In the old town of Ghadames, in western Libya, small squares open up among the covered lanes, where people met, prayed and rested in the shade. The whitewashed walls, decorated with patterns in red, and the arches of the houses reflect the light and keep the inside cool. For centuries Ghadames was a key stop for caravans carrying gold, ivory and salt between the Sahara and the Mediterranean, and its springs watered gardens of date palms. This photo shows the white arches and benches of Al-Touta square.

Puzzle tip: start with the white arches and their shadows, then the benches and walls, and the paved ground and the sky last.
