About Ankole Cattle Resting, Wakiso

Ankole cattle, with their enormous curved horns, have been kept for centuries by the herding peoples of south-western Uganda, above all the Bahima. Their horns can grow more than a metre and a half from tip to tip and are full of blood vessels that help the animals lose heat in the sun. For their owners the cattle were a measure of wealth and honour, and the long-horned cows were often given names and praised in poems. Today they are kept all over the country, including Wakiso, the district around Kampala. In this photo a herd rests and grazes on a patch of red earth.

Puzzle tip: the cattle and their long horns are the best place to start; the pale sky comes last.
