About Samoa
Polynesians have lived here for about 3,000 years, and Samoa is often called the cradle of Polynesia. Germany and then New Zealand ruled the islands until 1962, when Samoa became the first Pacific island country to win its independence. Village life still follows fa'a Samoa, the Samoan way, led by chiefs called matai.
You can climb down the ladder into To Sua, look across from Lalomanu Beach to Nu'utele Island, follow the black lava cliffs of O Le Pupu-Pu'e National Park and visit an old church left in ruins on Savai'i.
