Grand Tour of Europe

About this journey

Three centuries ago, young travellers set off on a Grand Tour of Europe to see its great cities, art and ruins for themselves. This journey takes the idea much further: forty-one puzzles in twenty-eight countries, travelled as one long route from the Atlantic coast of Portugal to the shores of the Caspian Sea.

Start at the Belém Tower in Lisbon and head through Spain to the French Riviera and Monaco, then north to Paris, London, Dublin and Edinburgh. Cross to Iceland and on to Scandinavia: the old wharf of Bergen, Oslo, Stockholm, a red cottage under the northern lights in Finnish Lapland and the harbour of Nyhavn in Copenhagen.

From Amsterdam the route turns south through Berlin, Prague, the High Tatras and Budapest to the lakes of Hallstatt and Bled, then on to Venice, Milan and the Matterhorn. After Florence, Rome and the Vatican come Sicily, Dubrovnik, Athens and Santorini, before the last stops lead from Cyprus and Istanbul across the Black Sea to Georgia, Armenia and, finally, the Maiden Tower in Baku.
