About Halloween
Halloween grew out of Samhain, the old Celtic festival that marked the end of the harvest and the start of winter, when people in Ireland and Scotland lit bonfires and carved lanterns from turnips. Emigrants took these customs to North America, where pumpkins replaced the turnips. Our puzzles visit pumpkin farms in the USA and Canada, the pumpkin festival in Ludwigsburg, the Witch House in Salem, Bran and Corvin castles in Transylvania and the cliff-top abbey of Whitby, where Bram Stoker found the name Dracula. They also visit Burg Eltz and Hohenzollern in Germany, the misty castles of Scotland, Dunluce on its cliff in Northern Ireland, Highgate Cemetery in London, the Dark Hedges, the Crooked Forest in Poland, the Hoia-Baciu forest in Romania and the Initiation Well of Sintra, all described in our guide to the spookiest castles and places in the world.
Tip for Halloween puzzles: start with the pumpkins, which have strong orange colours and round shapes, then build the houses and castles, and leave the sky and the grass for last.
